Generally, monuments in Hampi have all parking spaces nearby. There is enough space and they are generally safe. Specifically for the Virupaksha temple, let me guide you through how the entrance looks like.

Layout of Virupaksha Temple

The entrance to the temple is through a road that is called the Hampi Bazaar street. The Hampi Bazaar street historically used to be one of the most important markets of Vijayanagar. Precious stones were sold in this market.

When you approach the Hampi bazaar street, walking to the left takes you to the Virupaksha Temple. While going to the right takes you to Yeduru Basavanna or Monolithic Bull statue.

Virupaksha Temple Hampi Parking Lot

The parking lot of the temple is at a distance of about 500 meters from the main temple. The space is adequately spacious with provision to have many vehicles.

Outline of the parking space on Google maps

In the above Google maps, the left most point is the marker of Virupaksha Temple. The right most point is the monolithic bull (or Yeduru Basavanna) statue.

The area enclosed between the dark and light blue roads on the right side is the parking space. The parking space opens up right in the middle of Hampi Street.

To get some clearer idea of the parking lot, here are some important distances:

Virupaksha temple500 meters (nearest point to the left) – 900 meters (farthest point to the right)
Yeduru Basavanna50 meters (closest point to the right) – 400 meters (farthest point, left most point of the parking lot)

Is the parking lot well managed?

Yes, the parking lot has adequate space and is well managed. In peak seasons though, the number of vehicles swell up. It is observed in such cases the vehicles spill outside of the parking lot onto the Hampi street.

There is a nominal fees (cost) for parking here. The fees is collected on exit of the vehicle.

The parking is safe. One important consideration to keep in mind is the lot is about 400 meters in length. So if you intend to reach the Yeduru Basavanna statue, then it is better to park towards the extreme right end which is much nearer. While the distance is not significant enough to be worried about, during sunny or hotter days, the walk can be difficult. Keep this in mind especially if you have elderly people or those who are averse to the Indian heat, visiting with you.

Amenities in the Virupaksha temple Hampi Parking Lot

The parking space of the temple is quite busy. You will find several street vendors. You will also find a number of autos here. There are also vendors selling fruits as well.

If you want to carry bananas for Lakshmi, Virupaksha temple’s elephant, then this is a great place to buy them. The vendors can direct you how many to buy.

You should be careful about in the Virupaksha temple Hampi Parking Lot

Keep two things in mind here. The most important thing to be carried in mind are the monkeys. There are many monkeys here and they are not very shy. So, be prepared to see them on your way. However, they do not worry or cause trouble. But, it is certainly better to be careful of your belongings.

The second thing to be careful about is the uneven terrain of the surroundings. Though, the Hampi Bazaar street is a normal, reasonably large road that is simple to walk on.

The third aspect to be careful about is the heat, if you are visiting during off season times. Bear in mind that post February, even before the onset of peak summers, Hampi can become significantly hot. Remember to carry water, umbrella and walking in the heat.
