Mysore has popular religious temples like Chamundeshwari temple and Somanathapura temple. There is no formal dress code in Mysore or in surrounding places. Mysore is an urban center and you may not be stopped from entering anywhere. However it is advisable to wear modest clothes to show respect towards sacred places.

The dress code for temples in Mysore is based on cultural and religious traditions that promote modesty, cleanliness, and respect for the temples.

It is a good idea to keep in mind below points for appropriate dress code when visiting temples in Mysore:

Clothing Options :

  • Wear modest clothing that covers the shoulders, and knees.
  • Avoid wearing revealing clothing such as tank tops, shorts, miniskirts, and sleeveless tops.
  • Loose-fitting clothes are most preferred.
  • Traditional Indian clothes such as sarees, salwar kameez, or dhotis are also some of the options for people who love to wear Indian clothes.

Footwear :

  • Remove footwear before entering the inner sanctum of the temple. Most temples have designated areas or shoe racks where visitors can leave their footwear before proceeding further. There are generally caretakers who may charge a nominal fee to look after the safety of the footwear.

Avoid Non-vegetarian Items:

  • Avoid bringing non-vegetarian food

Respectful Behaviour :

  • Avoid loud conversations

Photography and Videography:

  • In some temples, photography may be prohibited in certain areas or during specific rituals. Ask for permission before taking photographs or videos inside the temple.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a respectful and comfortable visit to Mysore’s sacred temples.
