A cluster of temples on Hemakuta Hill is dedicated to various deities, primarily Lord Shiva.
1. Hemakuta Hills
The hill is believed to be the place where Lord Shiva performed penance before marrying Goddess Parvati.
Shiva burnt Kaamdev to ashes when the latter disturbed his meditation. The marriage of Virupaksha (Shiva) and Pampa (Parvati) happened in the nearby Virupaksha temple.
This hill is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the monkey god and a central character in the Ramayana.
2. Anjaneyadri Hill
At the top of the hill is a temple dedicated to Hanuman with a flight of 575 steps leading up to it.
This temple is dedicated to Lord Rama as Raghunatha.
3. Malyavanta Raghunathaswamy Temple
It is believed to be the place where Lord Rama stayed during his search for Sita.
4. Matanga Hill
The hill is named after Sage Matanga, a revered figure in Hindu mythology.
In the Ramayana, Matanga Hill is believed to be the place where Lord Rama first met Sugriva, the exiled monkey king.
Mythology associates Anegundi with Kishkinda and the monkey kingdom.
5. Anegundi
Located on the opposite bank of the Tungabhadra River from Hampi, Anegundi is an ancient town believed to be much older than Hampi itself.
