Krishnadevaraya built the Krishna Temple in 1513 AD to commemorate his victory over the Gajapati king of Odisha. The idol was brought from the Udaygiri fort.

Destruction of the Krishna Temple
The major destruction of Hampi, including the Krishna Temple, occurred in 1565 after the Battle of Talikota. A coalition of Deccan Sultanates defeated the Vijayanagara army.
Missing architectural elements, broken carvings, and signs of fire could be evidence of the destruction. However, the overall structure of the temple remained relatively intact.
What to see at the Krishna Temple
1. Intricate Carvings The temple is famous for its intricate carvings that adorn the pillars, walls, and ceilings. These carvings depict various scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela.
2. Architectural Style The Krishna Temple is built in the Vijayanagara architectural style, which is characterized by its use of pillars,  domes, and intricate carvings.
3. Elephant Balustrades:  The entrance to the temple hall is flanked by impressive elephant balustrades which are unique features of the temple. Most figures of the elephants are defaced today.
4. Gejjala Mantapa The Gejjala Mantapa is a rectangular hall located within the temple complex. The hall was used for various religious ceremonies and performances.
5. Unexcavated Areas The temple complex is quite large, and not all areas have been fully excavated. There's a possibility of hidden chambers or artifacts waiting to be discovered by archaeologists.
