In our trip to Belur, we had a 2-night stay at the Hotel Mayura Velapuri in Belur. We had researched and planned a trip to Belur and Halebidu. We wanted to really visit the capital of the Hoysalas and wanted to see the India of 10th – 12th century AD.

We visited towards March end. The weather was increasingly becoming harsh. However, it has not yet reached its peak.

This post is to share our experience of our 2 night stay the hotel, its facilities, the food, staff, location and other aspects.

Do note that the review is based on our personal stay. So the feedback is first hand, and perhaps has a risk of being a single experience. It will be a good idea to match our experience against a larger set of reviews from other popular travel websites.

Our overall rating (4/5)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Absolutely fantastic location, comfortable stay. Kitchen staff can be slightly friendlier, room cleanliness can be slightly better.

These are generally accurate.

Location

Location is the biggest advantage of the hotel. The hotel is hardly 400 meters from the famous Hoysala Channakeshava temple, which is the main attraction of Belur.

The hotel opens up to a main road that is not as busy as Bangalore streets. However, busy enough to be safe.

This hotel is also great to serve as a base location for visiting Halebidu, and Belavady.

Nearness to tourist sites (5/5)

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The hotel’s location is perfect for Belur. Two places you should visit while you are here:

  1. The Channakeshava Temple, which is the main attraction of Belur.
  2. The Yagachi Dam which is about 3 kms from the hotel.

At the time of our visit, the Yagachi river was completely dry, the weather being at its peak temperature. However, there are places to boat at the other end (reservoir) of the dam.

Food (4.5/5)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The only reason for deducting the half star is the slight indifference of the restaurant staff. They could do a bit better job with the service, ACs.

From their efficacy, to the food quality and timeliness, the restaurant is perfectly okay. It will not cause discomfort to you. In fact, we did have some excellent food during our stay here!

Our rooms were booked with breakfasts. Bookings with breakfasts had a separate dining area. We were the only ones there. The breakfasts were South India, with unlimited quantity. The restaurant staff during the mornings were more accommodating and attentive in comparison to the staff in the second half.

During dinners, we tried out a variety of items – Dosas, Noodles, Daal, Jeera rice and others. The preparation was good. We did not have any complaints as far as the food went.

Rooms (4/5)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Do remember, this is not a Star hotel. The stay was comfortable. The ACs and other aspects of the rooms were absolutely functional. Infact they worked well. They did not have a mini-refrigerator but, we did not have the need for any.

There was a spare single bed in both rooms that served as good quick resting beds. Rooms are generally spacious, clean and comfortable.

We had one cleanliness issue in our room but, the staff rectified it quickly. Given that the property is green and large, it is perhaps one of the smaller downsides of the other advantages of the cooler greenery.

Bathrooms (4/5)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Again – no complaints. Not luxury bathrooms. But clean, spacious, functional bathrooms. Initially we realised the geysers were not working. However, we were later informed the water was centrally heated worked with Solar power. So rooms did not need separate heaters!

Staff Help (3.5/5)

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

It will be unfair to say the staff were not helpful. However, they were not super-proactive. Their was a certain lack of interest from the staff in making their guests stay memorable. Their awareness of the tourist value of Belur was also lacking. For example, when we sought information on how we should plan our visits to important places, they were not super-effective. Their information was inadequate, not helpful.

Flexibility

We did not have too much experience on this count. In general, this becomes super helpful when you need relaxation with Checkin or Checkout timings. We did not need it from the staff.

We do not have a strong view in this aspect.

Environment and Surroundings

Rating: 1 out of 5.

The hotel compound is green with trees all around. Though we visited in March end with unfriendly temperature, the surroundings made the climate cool and comfortable.

Overall Experience (4/5)

Overall, our stay at the hotel was pleasant, and comfortable. The location was simply awesome. And on the other aspects, the hotel was more than useful.

Overall, though we did stay in only one hotel in Belur, we can happily recommend you the hotel.
