[Update as of 29th March 2024] I recently visited Hampi. The following noticeable updates on the Anjaneyadri Hill are worthwhile to know:
- About half of the climb, somewhere around 300 steps have been pleasantly covered with sheds. There is a pleasant chant of ‘Jai Ram, Sri Ram’ that accompanies you during your ascent.
- It seems more pilgrims are visiting the temple. The temple has certainly become more organized.
- There was a continuous recitation of Ramcharitmanas for many years. I did not see any recitation at present any more, which is really sad.
- The top of the hill has been fenced with a glass boundary.
- The entrance to the temple is through a queue. You can buy prasad at a counter at the very start of when you enter the temple.
- You may leave your footwear at the bottom of the hill. This is where 99% of the visitors leave their footwear. However, there is also a place at the top of the hill just before you enter the temple area where you may keep your footwear. If possible, it is best to leave footwear at the bottom of the hill, since it is respectful to the place and the devotion of other pilgrims.
- The best way to climb the hill is in stages. Do not rush it if you are not in a great shape. It is best to take short periodic breaks, say every 20-30 steps.
- You will find many devotees chanting Sri Rama’s name that will keep energizing you!
- If possible begin your ascent early in the morning, say around 7 AM. This will save you exposure to direct sun.
(End of updates)
Hampi, the erstwhile capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, is a treasure trove of historical ruins and architectural marvels. But nestled amidst these remnants of a bygone era lies a place of immense spiritual significance – the Anjaneyadri Temple.
Spiritual Significance
Anjaneyadri Hill, also known as the Monkey Hill, is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the revered monkey god in Hinduism. The temple at the summit, the Anjaneyadri Temple or Yantroddhara Anjaneya Temple, is a popular pilgrimage destination for devotees seeking blessings and inner strength. The temple houses a rock-carved idol of Hanuman, along with shrines dedicated to Lord Rama and his wife, the divine mother, Sita.
Trekker’s Delight
The trek to the Anjaneyadri Temple is a moderately challenging one, with around 575 steps carved into the hillside. The path winds its way through boulders and offers glimpses of the surrounding countryside. The trek is a perfect way to experience the natural beauty of Hampi and to add a touch of adventure to your pilgrimage.
Geographical Location
The Anjaneyadri Hill is situated in Anegundi, about 4 kilometers from the Hampi ruins. It stands tall amidst a landscape of granite boulders and lush greenery, offering a unique geographical contrast. The hill itself is around 575 meters high, providing a challenging yet rewarding trek for those seeking an adventurous pilgrimage.
A Photographer’s Paradise
The Anjaneyadri Hill presents photographers with a multitude of captivating scenes. The whitewashed temple atop the hill creates a stark contrast against the backdrop of the rugged landscape. The panoramic view from the summit encompasses the Tungabhadra River snaking its way through the ruins of Hampi, offering breathtaking vistas for photographers to capture.
Proximity to the Tungabhadra River
The Anjaneyadri Hill’s proximity to the Tungabhadra River adds another layer of charm to the location. The river, a source of life and sustenance, flows majestically on the northern side of the hill. The sight of the river and the surrounding greenery provides a sense of peace and tranquility to the entire area.
Planning Your Visit to the Anjaneyadri Temple
The best time to visit the Anjaneyadri Temple is during the cooler months, from October to February. It’s advisable to start your climb early in the morning to avoid the harsh afternoon sun. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes suitable for trekking and carry sufficient water for the climb. Your local guides or hotel staff can help you with general directions.
An unforgettable experience
A visit to the Anjaneyadri Temple is more than just a pilgrimage; it’s an immersive experience that combines spirituality, adventure, and breathtaking natural beauty. So, the next time you find yourself in Hampi, don’t miss the opportunity to climb the Anjaneyadri Hill and discover the magic that awaits you at the summit.
